The Phluphian Dolleck

In today's New York Times, there's an article about the Philadelphia dialect and how it's beginning to fade.  That's too bad.  I've lived in eastern Pennsylvania for 33 years, but never really got to hear and appreciate the unique sound of Philly until we moved to its outskirts about eight years ago.  My favorite: "Woojiz like some more coffee?"

The article mentions Sean Monahan, whose humorous videos highlight his own accent, of which he's quite proud.  If you ever plan to come to the City of Brotherly Love, be sure to brush up so you can spot the accent when it appears and appreciate it before it fades for good ...

Please note Philadelphia's professional sports teams: the Flars, Iggles, and Phulls!

I also like his short "instructional" videos featuring individual words.  I think it would be fun to show these in class.  Play the first time with sound muted and let learners try to guess what the "real" words are!
